Travel the World for Free?

If you'd like to see the world, make new friends, and save some serious cash, check out GlobalFreeloaders.com -- an online network of people willing to accommodate travelers at their own convenience, in any way that they can. Completely free of charge. Whether its just a spare mattress or a spare bedroom or even a granny flat. Not only do you get free accommodation but you also get the inside knowledge, experience and culture that comes with staying with a local that you'd never be exposed to staying in a hotel or hostel. We heard about this cool site at a recent culinary event, from two people who had both been using the site for years and were thrilled with the results, including several stays at extremely beautiful homes in India and France.

Kids Making a Difference

We were surfing around JustGive.org, a cool website that connects people with charities and causes, and found a section called Inspiring Kids Making a Difference If you need a little inspiration in your day, surf on over to read about:
  • 10-year-old Stacey who raised money for bulletproof vests for police dogs
  • 9-year old Melissa who started KidsFACE, the largest youth environmental organization
  • Fifth graders at an elementary school who collect book donations and send them to schools in need, in memory of a student who passed away
  • 7-year-old Jean who picks up cans along the roadside to recycle
A gentle reminder that when we think of youth today, we should remember these powerful kids, and not the headlining-grabbing stories of Hollywood youth that the media bombards us with.

How to Make a Better World

There's a new and updated version of The Better World Handbook, a great little book of "small changes that make a big difference." The handbook discusses some thought theory (the cycle of cynicisms and hope, ten thought traps, etc.) lays out the seven foundations of a better world (economic fairness, social justice, comprehensive peace, etc.), and also features an extensive list of simple things anyone can do to make a difference. Here are the Top 10:
  1. Buy a low emission, fuel-efficient car
  2. Limit your work time
  3. Buy less stuff
  4. Buy products from socially responsible companies
  5. Make time for loved ones
  6. Eat less meat
  7. Open an account at a socially responsible bank
  8. Conserve energy and water
  9. Watch less TV
  10. Join an organization you care about
Check out the Better World Handbook website for additional resources like a better world shopping guide and a listing of gas stations ranked by their environmental impact.
